Role
Instructional Designer
Business Goal
Lower staff exposure incidents linked to improper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use by 30% within 6 months.
Performance Gap
Medical professionals all learn the “donning” and “doffing” process as part of their medical training. However, when under pressure, especially if it’s an emergency scenario, it’s easy to mix up steps, which can cause unintended contamination.
Solution
I created a visual job aid poster that uses numbers and icons to make the PPE sequence quick to scan and easy to follow under pressure. Since using jargon adds unnecessary mental effort at a
high-pressure moment. I chose plain language (“Put On” and “Remove”) so staff can focus on the action, versus remembering terminology. The poster is placed at the doorway so staff see it every time they enter or exit, ensuring the instructions are available at the exact moment of need.
Intended Outcome
By reducing skipped and/or misordered steps, the medical team will more consistently
put on and remove their PPE, leading to less staff exposure linked to improper PPE use.
